DIESEL ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING

That noisy machine under the floorboards can cause fear in the heart of many auxiliary sailors for lack of knowing the basics of trouble shooting problems with an engine. Two days get comfortable answering - What is that noise? Why did the temperature spike? Learn key maintenance items and how to fix most common issues. Great class ( 2 days)

CRUISING SPINNAKER

Race or Cruising these are fun reaching sails. Cruising Spinnakers are perfect for the cruising couple of family. Require minimal gear and create little trouble if handled right. Any spinnaker can cause damage if not set, tacked or taken down properly. To extend the wind angles we have a few tricks to share, too. (2 day course)

SPINNAKER 122- ESTUARY

Start learning to dance on the foredeck. Understand the terms and common slang. Understand all 5+ jobs. How Point, pit and helm make a whole. Learn the art of the Sewer Rat -how to pull in, pack and set up in the flat waters of the Oakland Alameda Estuary. Set-fly-douse, Set- fly-gybe-gybe douse. End for End or Dip-Pole. Peals?

SPINNAKER 123- SF BAY

Learn Spinnaker on San Francisco Bay. It’s GREAT! Once able to fly a ‘Chute’ on the Bay the rest seems easy. Work behind islands till the basics of how to deal with common problems then out into the open Central Bay waters. Finish with a run from the Gate. It is exciting sailing. Can work with both Asym and Tri.

NAVIGATION - THE REST OF IT

Coastal Navigation ASA-105 course is a classroom series. It covers the key skills in the books but skips other valued methods to determine location, course and ETAs. Prior to a 5 day ocean adventure or ocean passage. Many want more training aboard to be able to work below with confidence and not get sea-sick due to stressings. Taken 1 day at a time.

Get your SEA LEGS On

Learn how to set up a boat for offshore sailing.  When ready, shove off to begin acquiring ‘sea legs’ to simply enjoy sailing in the open ocean. Strongly suggest two days, before a 5 day Ocean 106- ACC. Helps to get over sea sickness

HEAVY WEATHER STRATEGIES

One of our most popular courses. Work with many of the toys your've read about. The Entrance to SF Bay has wind and wave that mean we do not have to go too far to get the conditions needed to simulate and be in real heavy weather from May-August. Perhaps you’ve read about what to do if the weather wears you out or becomes dangerous for your boat - but have you actually tried these techniques?

CREW OVERBOARD CLINIC

Owner Mary SwiftSwan is 1of 3 original investigators who pioneered live crew overboard returns and recovery technique checks. We verified what was myth vs real and proven knowledge of what works. The class gets the results as we explore 5 return methods by sail and 2 by power. Check most all the recovery equipment proven to get someone back aboard safely. Actually that is the hard part. It may be rare that this misadventure happens on your boat - but it happens to someone most every weekend April-October in SF Bay. Those with these skills can be the hero team if the closest boat to lend aid. If it does happen aboard your boat, return and retrieve with proven options you can do.(1 or 2 day course, depending on background and level of competence)

NIGHT SAILING

Afterguard is located on the Oakland Estuary. The Port of Oakland is the 5th busiest container port in the United States. We always see work boats in action at night. It is a key skill to identify these boats in any weather to know when to move and which way to keep clear. What channels to listen to and what apps can help for inland waters. Can you tell the tug in this picture has chain and barges that extend greater than 200 meters behind it? How did we know that we'd have a long wait to cross behind him? (Classroom starts at 1pm. Sail till 9pm.)
