Instructor - Charter Captain

David became certified as an ASA Sailing instructor for courses from 101-Basic Sailing to 104- Bareboat Chartering in 2011 adding Cruising Multi-Hull in 2012. He is a wonderful ASA Sailing Instructor and Charter Captain. David and girlfriend Angie Aragon were regulars to provide the fun 3 hr tours followed by an hour of wine tasting called the San Francisco Bay Experience on our Catamaran from Treasure Island over most of 2012.

In Summer David and Angie move their weekend efforts to their other love and area of expertise - Kite Sailing instruction.

Our Crew

Mary SwiftSwan, aka Captain Mary, began teaching sailing in 1984, beginning with teaching Spinnaker on San Francisco Bay. In 1985 obtained her first US Coast Guard license and American Sailing Association (ASA) instructor certifications for 101-106 Begining through Advanced Coastal. Today Mary holds a USCG Master’s 100 Ton sail and power license, more ASA certifications plus is an active Instructor Evaluator. Mary was the first woman to request to be an ASA Instructor Evaluator in 1997. Captain Mary was selected by ASA as 1 of 4 top I.E. instructors to join an author team for ASA’s two first level instruction books for 101 and 103, published in 2010 & 2012. She led the effort to create an ASA 110-Small Boat program in 2000. Initiator and participant to create an award winning program for 5th grade called 'Sailing into Science' for Lake Merritt in 1999. Was successful in obtaining college accedidation for the CSU/UC systems for her college version of ASA courses in 1996. Mary has sailed from San Francisco to southern CA and on to Baha. She enjoyed Puget Sound, SF to Hawaii and back and sailing the shores of Texas, Great Lakes and Florida. Has sailed isles of the Caribbean and Tahiti. The Med is on her list. Captain Mary has owned her own sailing school, since 1987. She compliments this work as a active photographer, published writer and on-board chef.

Steve Swan, (aka Perfectly Frank), is our outstanding Basic Sailing Instructor and stunning as a Vocal Performer in the style of Frank Sinatra. In his 30s Steve began sailing with an elder friend. In 2000 her re-met Mary Swift at a multi-year High School reunion. They had gone to 8th grade together and not seen each other since. In order to go out with Mary, he happily took sailing lessons. They enjoyed sailing together so he took more lessons. They married in 2002. Steve soon become both an excellent teacher and skipper. Steve focuses his instruction on patient teaching of the basics giving a solid foundation to begin advancing sailing knowledge.

Nico began sailing a Laser at age 10 on a small lake in Santa Rosa. The summer Nico was 16, became the lead ‘Sailing Instructor for the City of Santa Rosa at Howarth Park. At 19, Nico focused on a sailing as a career when he began working with Afterguard Sailing Academy successfully attaining certification to teach ASA small boat. He first ran summer camps, then worked with our High school academic/sailing school year programs. At 21, Nico took a winter job to teach sailing for Club Med on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. At the end of that 7-month contract, he returned to help expand academic programs for HS to college, add racing to summer programs for youth, plus added 101 keelboat to his growing list of ASA instructor certifications through and for teaching with Afterguard Sailing Academy.

Dan began boating at 15 years old out of Rockport Massachusetts on a 15 ft fishing skiff. Dan worked as a marine electrician for a year on large vessels in Boston, MA. After moving to the west coast, Dan began sailing in both Santa Cruz and San Francisco mostly chartering boats locally and also traveling including the Puget Sound and the Caribbean.
Dan owned a Lido 14 for a short while and in 2003 bought an International Folkboat, which he sailed out of Berkeley until 2010. In 2009 Dan became an ASA certified Sailing Instructor up to Bareboat Chartering. The same year he got a USCG OUPV License. Dan Began then began teaching for Afterguard. In 2012 Dan added Cruising Cat instructor and teaches all these levels plus captains charters out of Treasure Island on our Catamaran.
